The Turboprop Powered "Super" Guppies
Super Guppies
The Super Guppies were a follow-on development of the "Pregnant Guppy" transport aircraft. Aerospace Industries was formed in 1962 and would go on to build and be the first operators of the Guppy fleet. Built in Santa Barbara California, the two turboprop Super Guppies would fly over 2 million miles in support of NASA programs. Later they would be purchased by Airbus Industries to transport commercial jet fuselages from the German sub-contractor to the final assembly lines in France. Airbus would also negotiate to buy enough parts to build a further example of the type which would be assembled by Union de Transports Aeriens, UTA.
For in depth coverage of all the Guppies, real and proposed, visit the excellent website "All about Guppys" by Daren Savage. This site also includes an in depth article about his efforts to build a large scale radio control flying model of the Guppy. Great fun and very extensive coverage of this fascinating aircraft and its history.
