Smithsonian V2 Exteriors

NOTE: The photographers scale seen in many of these shots is 6 x 12 inches
in size with inches shown in the checkerboard portion.

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C. has a V2 which was originally found in a U.S. technical school long after the war.  It was not complete at that time and some parts were added to it from other sources while still others appear to have built from scratch.  Unlike most displayed V2s this example features a combustion chamber which appears to be in its original condition (it hasn't been painted).

About These Photos

Surviving V2 examples are extremely difficult to photograph if they are presented in the black and white "roll pattern" as seen above.  In these cases a tripod should be used to get exposures under the ambient lighting but the Smithsonian, like many museums, does not allow the use of tripods anymore.  This means that the photographer ends up with photos like these where the camera either exposes for the black area, leaving the white totally washed out or it exposes for the white leaving the black as a solid silhouette.
