The Jupiter II was perhaps the most completely built spacecraft ever designed for TV or motion pictures.  Not only did it exist as a full scale interior-exterior set (the upper deck), it also existed as a full scale mock-up (see the "Lost in After Space" page for behind the scenes photo) which was free-standing on its landing gear and as a whole fleet of different scale miniatures.  This presented the directors with unlimited possibilities for scenes and locations and represented an extremely rare opportunity in the world of film making.  The normal situation is to build only the bare minimum required for a production but this case seems to indicate a high level of confidence on the part of 20th Century Fox executives in Irwin Allen and his ability to capture an audience.
