The "Star Trek II" Klingon Battle Cruiser
In the late 1970's, when it finally dawned on the executives at Paramount studios that they might be able to make money with new Star Trek shows, they decided to produce a new television series which would be called "Star Trek II". Extensive pre-production work was completed and sets were under construction when the studio changed direction in mid-stream and decided to produce a feature film instead. This new film would come to be known as "Star Trek the Motion Picture" or "STMP" for short. The photos above depict the Klingon Battle Cruiser as originally built for "Star Trek II". By comparing it to the photos below you will see how the feature film production demanded a much higher degree of detail. After all, it was now going to be spread across forty foot motion picture screens!
On May 17th 2004 the B&W pictures seen above were sent to Fujicolor for 4x6 reprints and they never returned. This is not the first time that negatives by Phil Broad have been stolen by Fujicolor, two rolls of color film detailing a Scud Missile Launcher and missile were also stolen by them. To all the fans of this ship and this web site I make the following request: if you are attending a science fiction convention or are cruising Ebay or are at anyother venue where such pictures are sold or traded and you see prints of the pictures displayed here being offerred, please contact me at c367516@yahoo.com Please give me the name of the dealer and location where the pictures were being sold. People in the Hollywood area should keep a particular watch out for these images as the negatives dissappeared at the LA Fujicolor Lab. Thank you for your concern.
The STMP Klingon Battle Cruiser

This is the filming miniature
of the "Klingon Battle Cruiser" as built for "Star Trek the Motion Picture"
(STMP). The model is approximately 48 inches long, largely made of
wood and has a heavy metal armature hidden inside. As with the STMP
"Enterprise", this
model is very finely detailed to allow the camera to get within less than
an inch for close-ups. The model is painted in many shades of dark
green, varying between forest green and olive drab. The markings
seen in Klingon lettering are red with black outlines. One of many
outstanding features of this model is the fact that the model builders
did not simply glue kit parts to the basic form, they cut and combined
the kit parts to form new specific patterns and structures. It is
this extra care which sets up all the STMP miniature work as a new high-water
mark for others to match. My hat is off to all who participated in
building these miniatures for showing us all what "fine modeling" really
means.
