This Alien Probe ship not only carries a crew but is used as a huge collecting device for capturing and storing energy beamed up to it by the crew from the surface of a given planet. This energy not only drives the ship but also sustains the crew as food. It features an organic design which is the typical fallback position when film Art Directors cannot decide how to make something look "alien". Therefore it has no real logic or features which can be discussed, it simply "is". It does provide a suitably stark contrast to the Shuttle-based design of the probe sent from Earth, which is arguably its only purpose.
