The first new TV series to bear the name "Star Trek", after the the original show was canceled, would be "Star Trek the Next Generation". Set 90 years after the era of the original show, this new series would follow the exploits of an all-new crew who explored the galaxy in an all-new "Enterprise", the Enterprise "D". This new ship would be know as the "Galaxy Class" starship and for the first time would include among its compliment families and children. The ship had a crew roughly five times that of the original Enterprise but there was room onboard for plenty more. This ship would also feature for the first time specialized decks that could be configured to the preferred environment of nearly any species that needed to travel onboard her.
The ship was designed by Andy Probert
who would also work with Ed Whitefire on the original set of interior plans
for the "D", which are presented here for the first time anywhere.
Andy had worked his way up the ranks of the Star Trek Art Department, beginning
with "Star Trek the Motion Picture" where he was responsible for
the design of many of the auxiliary craft seen in that film. The culmination
of his work there would be when he was given the chance to provide the overall
design of the new "Enterprise D". He would also be responsible for
supervising the production of the commercial model kit made of this ship.
