Body Flap & External Tank Connections

The "body flap" extends beneath the main engine bells and protects them from the extreme temperatures experienced during re-entry.  Note the temporary cover protecting starboard side External Tank connection opening.  The doors seen here are covered with thermal tiles and snap shut after ET jettison to provide re-entry protection for the connections.
