The Seaview 16 Foot Miniature
Web site by: Phil Broad

This model was built to the scale of 3/4s of an inch to the foot or 1/16th scale.  It is a hollow fiberglass shell at least 3/8ths of an inch thick and weighs in at around 400 pounds.  This is also the model normally used to film the Flying Sub launching or docking with the Seaview.  The black & white photos at the top of the page were taken in the late '70s at the now defunct museum "Planes of Fame & Cars of the Stars" in Orange County, California.  At that time the model was just sitting on two saw-horses behind a rope and the stern was pushed up against a backdrop so no rear view photos were possible.  A friend and I simply stepped over the ropes while no one was watching to get this photo survey.  We also took the liberty of removing the conning tower and decking to photograph the interior.  Then we planned to move the model out to shoot the stern but when we tried to shift the model that's when we discovered how heavy it was.  We couldn't even make it jiggle, much less move it!  In fact it was so heavy that the saw horses were actually cutting into the lower keel area from its own weight.  It would then be about ten years before I would get the chance to photograph the stern and complete the survey you now see.  By this time it was in the hands of an east coast model builder who was restoring it and the lower row of color shots are the result.
