The Seaview is a ship which exists as many different miniatures and a partial full scale mock-up of the deck. The 8 foot miniature would be used for the majority of the effects filming but the 16 footer would see service for stunning scenes of the ship moving across the surface of the ocean (as above) and sequences showing the "Flying Sub" launching and re-docking. Because of its extreme weight the 16 foot model would be limited to shots of the ship running on the surface where it could be supported by a track underwater or shots where the ship was motionless and could be supported by wires or some other means. Generally the 8 foot model would be thrown underwater "javelin style" by a diver off screen and there are many out takes of the model twisting upside down and making other strange maneuvers after being released. All the models were made of fiberglass with working interior lighting in the nose and a full set of exterior running lights. The Flying Sub bay doors were operated by wires pulled by a mechanical effects man off camera. Both the 16 and 8 foot models featured working Flying Sub bay doors.
